Sep 12, 2019  Alan Renouf has announced through the PowerCLI blog the news few days back when the main news about VSAN and vSphere 5.5 U1 release.There is a new release of PowerCLI 5.5 R2 (Build 1649237 is VMware vSphere PowerCLI 5.5 Release 2) which brings many new support for different products and vSphere. Using PowerCLI for VMWare ESXi 5.5 espressobeanies Nov 7, 2017 12:18 PM I'm trying to figure out how to use PowerCLI for ESXi 5.5 to automatically create and start new machines from command-line.

HPONCFG can be used to set up and reconfigure the iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) management controller of a server. HPBOOTCFG can be used to set up the boot configuration for the server. SSACLI can be used in the configuration of HPE Smart Array controllers and attached storage. The HPTESTEVENT utility generates test WBEM indication and test SNMP trap. The HPE CONREP Utility enables server hardware configuration capture, set and duplication.

Installing Offline Bundles on an ESXi 5.5 Host Using vSphere CLI 5.5 esxcli Utility

You can use the esxcli utility in conjunction with offline bundles or with a depot. This topic describes the procedure using offline bundles.

Prerequisites
Before you can update or patch an ESXi 5.5 host from the command line, you must have access to a machine on which you can run the VMware vSphere Command-Line Interface 5.5 (vSphere CLI). You can install the vSphere CLI on your Microsoft Windows or Linux system. For information about importing or installing the vSphereCLI 5.5. see the VMware vSphere Command-Line Interface Guides.
Procedure

  1. Power off any virtual machines that are running on the host and place the host into maintenance mode.
  2. Transfer the offline bundle onto the ESXi host local path, or extract it onto an online depot.
  3. Install the bundle on the ESXi host.
    • Install remotely from client, with offline bundle contents on a online depot:
      esxcli -s <server> -u root -p mypassword software vib install -d <depotURL/bundle-index.xml>
    • Install remotely from client, with offline bundle on ESXi host:
      esxcli -s <server> -u root -p mypassword software vib install -d <ESXi local path><bundle.zip>
    • Install from ESXi host, with offline bundle on ESXi host:
      esxcli software vib install -d <ESXi local path><bundle.zip>
  4. After the bundle is installed, reboot the ESXi host for the updates to take effect.
  5. (Optional) Verify that the vibs on the bundle are installed on your ESXi host:
    esxcli -s <server> -u root -p mypassword software vib list
  6. (Optional) Remove individual vibs. <vib name> can be identified by listing the vibs as shown in #5:
    esxcli -s <server> -u root -p mypassword software vib remove -n <vib name>

Installing Offline Bundles on an ESXi 5.5 Host Using VMware vCenter Update Manager

Install the CLI,

tar xzf VMware-vSphere-CLI-5.1.0-780721.i386.tar.gz

cd vmware-vsphere-cli-distrib/

now run,

./vmware-install.pl

You now have to play and search what's available either as RHEL package or at search.cpan.org. For example I need this,

MIME::Base64 3.14 or newer

so,

yum search mime-base64

yum search perl grep -i mime-base64

> no mime-base64 package

then go to http://search.cpan.org/ and search for mime::base64,

wget http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/G/GA/GAAS/MIME-Base64-3.15.tar.gz

tar xzf..

cd ..

perl Makefile.PL

make

make install

and re-install vmware until there is no error left.

Note. to uninstall,

/usr/bin/vmware-uninstall-vSphere-CLI.pl

Ready to go

List all VMs on an ESX server,

vmware-cmd --server ESXI_HOST_FQDN -U short@ad.domain.net -P 'password' -l

> works

Note. no need to enable ssh on the vihost (the esxi)

Note the adding the FQDN helped when contacting one of the ESXis of the farm, otherwise I had the SOAP timeout too.

List all VM registered on the vCenter,

vmware-cmd --server VCENTER_HOST_FQDN --vihost ESXI_HOST_FQDN -U short@ad.domain.net -P 'password' -l

> doesn't work I get,

SOAP request error - possibly a protocol issue: 500 read timeout

Quoting vmware doc,

--server Target ESXi or vCenter Server system.

--vihost When you run vmware-cmd with the -H option pointing to a vCenter Server system, use --vihost to specify the ESXi host to run the command against.
