I'm working on my roommates Dell Latitude D600. (Re: older laptop) I've been doing some research on this, and don't seem to find much help. She's running XP Professional SP3. Pushing the power button has no effect at all. Going through the Start button, and clicking on the Off button does nothing either. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it.
Fl studio turn off mic. I'm considering just pulling the battery on it, (after the power chord is out, obviously), and I'm wondering if this will hurt it any...
Thanks,
Odean
Hi Odeon. Try shutdown -s from an elevated command prompt.
How long are you holding the power button? On my old D610 sometimes I had to push & hold the button for a good 30-45 seconds.
Is the system running normal until you try to shutdown? If it is running normal then what PH suggested is a good start.
When you go to shutdown in windows what does your system do?
Have you tried removing the power cord & battery? If so what happens when you try to power back up. This is checking your power button.
Look in your power options settings, there is a setting for what happens when you push the power button. Have you checked that to make sure it isn't incorrectly set?
Okay, Gentlemen. Thanks for getting back to me. First thing I noticed this morning, ( and I have NO idea what 'SHE' may have done to the thing this morning before I woke up, and then she left for work ), but now EVERYTHING is running very slowly. It takes roughly 20-30 seconds for to get any reaction to anything.
I was trying to run PH's idea 1st. And got this in Command Prompt, which actually looked promising to me, but I don't know what it means.

Then I tried germ-x's idea of holding the power button down for an extended period of time, and VIOILA!!! It shut off! Then after it restarted, I tried a little test. I tried PH's idea again and this time it worked. (?) Also, the 20-30 second delay issue has been resolved as well.
I did look in the power options settings as suggested, but I couldn't find anything that would suggest that the system was locked on. Also, the 'Turn off computer' button in the Start menu now works also.
If anyone has an idea what may have caused this, I would appreciate the input. I don't want to lecture her, ( God knows it doesn't work, or help! LOL) But for my own peace of mind, and knowledge, is what I'm looking for. THANKS!
Odean
it may have been a diode not letting the power through to complete the shut down sequence, i had the same prob, once i pressed. CTRL+ALT+DEL on that screen in the bottom r/hand corner i shut down there . (another way round it).
Since I had a Dell Latitude D610 that occasionally did just about the same thing I did a few things. On my system it appeared the hdd would hang and not let me do anything to power off except to remove all power including the battery. On the next reboot or two everything would be ok.
You have to hold the power button for approx 10 seconds for this unit to shut down. You can see this in your power options.
1) reinstalled the O/S to eliminate any gremlins
2) Reverted back to SP2.
3) update the touchpad drivers as it seemed they would get corrupted for whatever the reason. (I kept the driver setup files in a folder on C: drive for ease of reinstall.)
4) It is still running to day.

Thanks marks100, and germ-x too! I appreciate the input, and will carry on from here. It 'appears' to have solved the issue, for now...<grin>
